there are plenty of fun things to do for all the family in edinburgh! from historic venues and museums, to parks and playgrounds, there really is something for all ages! we’ve compiled a list of the dads rock team’s favourite places around scotland’s capital to visit.

1. The Royal Botanic Gardens

Perfect for enjoying the Scottish sunshine (!) or learning about nature, the Royal Botanic Gardens are based near the city centre and easy to get to. They are a fantastic place to explore, with plenty of opportunities to run around, learn about nature and play.

2. The National Museum

No matter what your little one’s current interest are, whether it’s space, Ancient Egypt, animals or science, there is something for everyone at The National Museum. There are lots of interactive exhibitions and activities, as well as dedicated family spaces for packed lunches, colouring and scavenger hunts. They also have a Family Hub with lots of activities and recommendations to make the most of your trip.

3. The Museum of Childhood

This was the first museum in the world dedicated to the history of childhood, and still stands today. With over 2000 artefacts of different childhood toys, this is a fantastic way to educate your children on “the olden days”, reconnect with some of your childhood favourites and enjoy some education.

4. Saughton Park

One of Team Dads Rock’s favourite parks in Edinburgh, Saughton Park is a stone’s throw away from our base in Gorgie. The park has plenty of green space, beautiful gardens, a playpark and even a skatepark! There are plenty of local amenities including the newly opened Four Square Cafe, which provides jobs to young people as well as volunteering opportunities to vulnerable and homeless individuals.

5. Your local library

There are lots of different libraries across Edinburgh and they are the perfect place to snuggle up with a good book, learn something new or get involved in activities. Libraries often hold a variety of different groups, Book Bug sessions, arts and crafts and more - so this is the perfect place to get involved with your local community. 6. The Meadows

A staple in natural Edinburgh, The Meadows is the perfect place to enjoy some nature and play. There is plenty of outdoor space, including a playpark, as well as tennis courts, archery, cycling paths and more - there really is something for everyone!

7. The Edinburgh Hills

Edinburgh has plenty of hills to choose from which make the perfect morning or day out. If you’ve got little ones, we recommend Calton Hill, or for the more experienced, the challenge of Arthur’s Seat might be one you take on. If you’ve got buggies or babies, we recommend walking around it rather than up - it’s a nice wander on a sunny day, while still giving you gorgeous views.

8. The National Gallery

Another favourite in Edinburgh, this is the place for you and your wee ones to become art connoisseurs! There are three galleries around Edinburgh, all of which have different pieces of art from around the world. They all hold a Family Friday event every week where you can get creative with hands-on activities. Additionally, there are free trails around the gallery, perfect for learning about art while keeping it entertaining.

9. Take a self-guided magical tour

For fans of Harry Potter, Edinburgh is the perfect place to immerse yourself in magical stories! Take yourself to Old Town and visit Victoria Street, the inspiration for the infamous Diagon Alley. Greyfriar’s Kirkyard also boasts many familiar names including McGonagall and Tom Riddle. If you’re looking for someone to fill your tour with fun facts, you can join a free tour here. 10. Come to a Dads Rock event!

Dads Rock hosts a huge range of different events that you and your little one can get involved in, all for free!. We hold playgroups every Saturday and Sunday at Gorgie Memorial Hall from 10:30am, with both indoor and outdoor activities. You can join us for various workshops, such as our hairstyling workshop which your little one can get involved with, or if you have a baby, our Dads and Baby group runs every Tuesday.
